Buy the Horse

I seen a post by a superstar trainer that made me laugh. “Why is it for sale? It’s over priced. Until someone buys the over priced horse and wins the world on it, then there is a line up for ones just like that one.”
I really think when dealing with customers or people in the horse world you need to have the patience of a saint. Because you get dealt a hand of lines, that I’m sure in your deepest thoughts couldn’t dream up.
Oh, I like him but I want to buy the palomino.
I’m very interested I want to try him this week. (This week never exists and I will never talk to you again.)
He’s perfect. I need a 1D horse, seasoned, ready to go. That runs poles, ropes, ranches, cuts a cow, and is perfectly straight confirmationally. My budget it $1000. So if you could sell him for that, I will take him!
He’s nice but I want a mare.
She’s nice but I want a gelding.
It’s nice but has no incentives.
Why is he/she for sale?
Here is the deal people.
1. If you want a winner and can afford it. Buy the winner regardless of its colour, size, make, etc
2. If you want a winner and can not afford it. Find a way to get a quality prospect, and put it through the steps to make one.
3. Understand not every horse is capable of being a 1D horse.
4. Understand it takes time to make a solid horse.
5. Understand the value of potential.
Understand your growth ratio of your investment.
6. Be real with your capabilities. This is not an insult, this is real. Some horses will be bred and capable above your pay grade.
This is fine, you must then shop for something cooler bred to match your ability and continue to grow.
Now when your horse shopping, as we all do at some time, please try the following
Bring your saddle if your trying a riding horse.
Prepare questions.
Do not come try the horse if you do not have money in hand.
Do not come across as a know it all.
Do not bother people if you are not in the market for another 6 months.
Do not ask the owner/trainer to drive 3-5 hours unless you ARE SERIOUS.
DO NOT BE LATE.
Be clear with your expectations and needs of your purchase.
We all know that horses have their own minds, body, and souls. So in some cases things do happen that is beyond anyone’s control.
“Those who said money can not buy you happiness, simply did not know where to shop”
“Money can buy you a fine dog, but only love can get him to wag his tail”
